Scholarships of the German-Ukrainian Historical Commission

The German-Ukrainian Historical Commission (GUHC/DUHK) annually supports early career researchers in the fields of Ukrainian, German, and German-Ukrainian history through research scholarships and academic support programs. These initiatives aim to foster international scholarly cooperation, facilitate archival research, improve access to historical sources, and strengthen academic exchange between Ukraine and Germany.

Research Scholarships in Germany

Once a year, the German-Ukrainian Historical Commission awards research scholarships to Ukrainian historians, providing an opportunity for short-term research stays in Germany.

The scholarships are intended to support research projects in the fields of Ukrainian, German, and German-Ukrainian history and enable work in archives, specialized libraries, and research institutions in Germany, as well as participation in conferences and academic events related to the research topic.

Eligibility

Applications are welcome from:

  • Master’s students,

  • PhD candidates,

  • early career researchers and postdoctoral scholars,

working on research projects related to Ukrainian, German, or German-Ukrainian history.

Basic Requirements

Applications generally include:

  • a description of the research project;

  • a justification for the research stay in Germany;

  • a work plan;

  • a CV and information on academic qualifications.

The duration of the scholarship, funding amount, deadlines, and current application requirements are determined by the annual call for applications.

Support for Archival Research in Ukraine (Archiv Research Support)

The German-Ukrainian Historical Commission also provides financial support for archival and research services in Ukraine for historians affiliated with German universities.

This program is designed to facilitate access to Ukrainian sources and research infrastructure and particularly supports projects based on archival materials and other resources from cultural heritage institutions.

Funding May Cover

Support may be provided for:

  • archival, library, and museum services;

  • copies, scans, and digital reproductions of documents;

  • translations of Ukrainian texts;

  • oral history interviews;

  • access to resources from archives, libraries, museums, and other cultural heritage institutions (GLAM – Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums).

Eligibility

Applications are open to researchers affiliated with German universities who work on topics related to Ukrainian or German-Ukrainian history within the framework of:

  • Master’s theses,

  • doctoral dissertations,

  • postdoctoral research projects.

Basic Requirements

Applications generally include:

  • a description of the research project;

  • a justification of the requested archival or research services;

  • an estimated budget;

  • a CV and information on academic qualifications.

The scope of funding, deadlines, and specific application requirements are defined in the annual call for applications.
