War and Occupation: Germany and Ukraine, 1939–1945
Edited by Prof. Kai Struve and Prof. Gelinada Hrychenko (forthcoming)
Leipziger Universitätsverlag, Leipzig, forthcoming 2026
This forthcoming volume explores the complex history of war, occupation, and violence in Ukraine during the Second World War, situating it within the broader context of German-Ukrainian relations. Bringing together contributions from leading internationalscholars, the book examines political, social, and cultural dimensions of the German occupation of Ukraine between 1939 and 1945.
The chapters address a wide range of topics, including military developments, everyday experiences under occupation, forced labor, collaboration and resistance, mass violence against civilian populations, and the Holocaust. Special attention is paid to the diversity of experiences in different regions of Ukraine and to the perspectives of both perpetrators and victims.
The volume is based on the work of the German-Ukrainian Historical Commission and reflects recent scholarly debates shaped by new archival research as well as changing perspectives on the Second World War in the context of current geopolitical developments.
By combining analytical approaches with a strong empirical foundation, this book contributes to a deeper understanding of the intertwined histories of Germany and Ukraine and highlights the relevance of this past for contemporary European memory and historical discourse.
Revolution and War: Ukraine and the Great Transformation of Modern Europe
Edited by Prof. Yaroslav Hrytsak and Prof. Martin Schulze Wessel
Leipziger Universitätsverlag, Leipzig, 2024
This volume explores the central role of Ukraine in the major transformations of European history. From the Cossack Revolution of 1648 to the upheavals of the twentieth century and the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war, developments in and around Ukraine have repeatedly shaped the political and historical trajectory of Europe.
The book demonstrates that the “Ukrainian question” has long been a key factor not only for Eastern Europe but for the continent as a whole. The First and Second World Wars, the revolutions of 1917, and the emergence of the global communist system were deeply connected to events in Ukraine. Understanding Europe’s past—and its present—therefore requires a closer engagement with Ukrainian history.
Bringing together leading scholars, this collection offers a multifaceted analysis of war, revolution, empire, and memory. It is based on the first conference of the German- Ukrainian Historical Commission, held in Berlin in May 2015, and reflects an ongoing effort to integrate Ukrainian perspectives into European historiography.
Hunger as a Weapon: The Holodomor in Ukraine as Genocide and a European Site of Memory
Edited by Prof. Yaroslav Hrytsak and Prof. Martin Schulze Wessel
Leipziger Universitätsverlag, Leipzig, 2024
This volume examines the Holodomor of 1932–1933 as one of the most devastating crimes of the Soviet regime and situates it within both Ukrainian and European historical contexts. The famine, which claimed millions of lives in Ukraine, is analyzed not only as a historical event but also as a case of state-induced mass violence with genocidal characteristics.
The book combines scholarly analysis with eyewitness accounts, many of which are published here in a comprehensive form for the first time. It explores how the famine was experienced, remembered, and communicated despite the Soviet regime’s systematic suppression of information.
A particular focus is placed on the transnational dimension of the Holodomor: the ways in which knowledge about the famine reached Central and Western Europe, as well as its role as a European site of memory. By integrating historical research, memory studies, and primary testimonies, the volume contributes to a deeper understanding of the Holodomor and its significance for European history.
The collection brings together contributions from leading international scholars and reflects ongoing efforts to establish the Holodomor as a central subject of academic and public discourse.
