Conferences of the German-Ukrainian Historical Commission: General Concept and Application Guidelines
The annual international conferences of the German-Ukrainian Historical Commission serve as a central platform for academic dialogue between Ukrainian, German, and international scholars. They aim to explore key questions of Ukrainian history within a broader European and transnational context.
The main objective of the conferences is to foster interdisciplinary and international exchange in fields such as history, memory studies, state-building, imperial and post-imperial transformations, and contemporary historiographical approaches. The thematic focus changes each year, covering different periods and analytical perspectives.
The conferences are held annually and take place in different cities and countries, including Germany, Ukraine, and other European academic centers, thereby strengthening international cooperation.
Participation and Application Requirements
The conferences are open to scholars from Ukraine, Germany, and other countries, including PhD candidates and early-career researchers.
Applicants are required to submit:
- an abstract (500–800 words),
- a short CV (maximum one page).
Applications must be submitted as a single PDF file to the Commission’s coordination office by the specified deadline.
The working language of the conference is English. The format may be:
- in-person,
- hybrid (online and on-site participation).
Applicants may indicate their preferred mode of participation.
Funding and Organizational Conditions
The organizers provide:
- accommodation,
- reimbursement of travel expenses (subject to prior agreement).
The conferences are funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with support from the Federal Foreign Office of Germany.
