Resolution of the German-Ukrainian Historical Commission on the Recognition of the Holodomor as Genocide by the German Bundestag
The German-Ukrainian Historians’ Commission welcomes the resolution of the German Bundestag regarding the Holodomor, which commemorates in a dignified manner the millions of Ukrainian hunger victims of Stalinist policies.
The Commission supports in particular the concern of the Bundestag to disseminate knowledge of the causes, extent and consequences of this hunger catastrophe, regardless of differences in the evaluation of the Holodomor. In recent years the German-Ukrainian Historians’ Commission has raised the issue of the Holodomor several times on its events and in the publications of its members, such as its Zoom-webinar from 24 September 2020, titled “Was the Holodomor a Genocide?” (see also the transcript of the webinar), or on its annual conference on 17-18 September 2021, titled “The Holodomor in Academic and Public Debates. Ukrainian and European Perspectives.”
The remembrance of the victims of the Holodomor obliges us to act against today’s attempts to destroy Ukraine.
